If not, you are not alone and understanding the difference can completely change how you think about preserving your memories.
Your Photo Library
Your photo library is your complete collection of memories. It includes every photograph you've ever kept, whether physical or digital, and often much more. Videos, slides, negatives, family documents, ticket stubs, newspaper clippings, greeting cards, and other memorabilia all become part of this collection.
For many people, this library fills hard drives, cloud storage, bookshelves, attics, garages, basements, closets, and guest rooms. It may be beautifully organized...or it feels overwhelming and may create a little anxiety every time you think about tackling it. Your photo library is everything you have, and it is OK that it is however it is.
Your Legacy Library
Your legacy library is something entirely different.
It is a thoughtfully curated collection of photographs that tell your story, or the story of someone you love.
Instead of saving every version of every moment, your legacy library focuses on the images that truly matter: your people, your places, your milestones, your traditions, and the experiences that shaped your life.
Imagine selecting just 10 to 30 meaningful photographs from each year. That becomes approximately 100 to 300 photos per decade. As an example, if I sat down today to tell the story of my first 50 years, I would probably choose somewhere between 500 and 1,500 photographs.
For comparison, right now, I have 12,234 photos on my phone alone! That's quite a difference.
By taking the time to cull, curate, and celebrate your memories, you create something that is manageable, meaningful, and much easier for future generations to enjoy. This is better for all involved. Do you want to ask someone else to sort through tens of thousands of photos (with people or stories that they might not know)? This is an invitation to intentionally tell your story - now.
Where Do You Start?
As we transition from fall into winter and the days become shorter, many of us naturally begin reflecting on the year that is coming to a close. This season is the perfect time to begin building your legacy library.
The good news? You don't have to start at the beginning. In fact, I encourage you to start wherever feels easiest—or most fun. Choose a year that brings you joy. It could be the year you graduated, got married, welcomed a child, took an unforgettable trip, or simply experienced a season of life that makes you smile.
Then ask yourself:
"If I could only keep 10 to 30 photographs from this year, which ones best tells my story?"
As you make your selections, take a few moments to record the stories behind them. Write them in a notebook, type them into a document, or simply record yourself speaking on your phone. Those names, places, and memories are often just as valuable as the photographs themselves.
If your favorite photos are still tucked away in albums or boxes, don't worry, you do not need to digitize everything right away. Start by digitizing only the images you want for your legacy library. You can always expand your photo library later.
Keep It Simple
Remember, this isn't about finishing your entire collection overnight.
Start with:
One year
One milestone
One vacation
One family tradition
One special person
Small, consistent steps make the process enjoyable and far less overwhelming.
Invite Others to Join You
Building a legacy library is even more meaningful when you do it together. Invite parents, siblings, children, or grandparents to look through photos with you. They can help identify names, dates, locations, and the little stories that may otherwise be forgotten. Often, those conversations become treasured memories themselves.
