Travel Smart & Protect Your Memories

Summer travel season is here! What are your plans? Are you heading out for a family vacation, road trip, reunion, graduation celebration, or simply spending more time outdoors? June is often when our cameras, aka our phones (for most of us), start working overtime.

While focusing on making memories, it is easy to forget that our phones now hold some of our most valuable possessions. Beyond our photos and videos, our phones provide access to nearly every part of our life, like passwords, banking, calendars (really the list is endless). A little preparation now can help protect both your memories and your digital security while traveling.

Below are a few Travel & Photo Safety Tips for you to be aware of before you embark on your summer adventures:

• Backup Before You Leave

  • Before any trip:

    • Back up your phone

    • Confirm your cloud storage syncing is working and that you have enough storage

    • Take pictures of all your important and relevant travel documents

• Turn Off Face ID at Airports or Border Crossings

  • This is one of the simplest travel safety steps you can take. Before going through airport security or border crossings, consider temporarily disabling Face ID or fingerprint unlock and switching to a passcode instead.

• Don’t Wait Until You Get Home to Organize

  • Time on a plane, train, or car (if you are a passenger), is a great time to purge and organize

    • Create a trip album before you leave and add favorites each evening

    • Delete duplicates as you go

    • Add quick captions while memories are fresh

    • If you are traveling with others, make a shared album, this will prevent duplicates from being made while also sharing memories!

• Be Careful Using Public Wi-Fi

  • It is always SO tempting to not use data, but your privacy is more important. Avoid logging into banking or sensitive accounts while connected to unsecured public Wi-Fi networks, better yet, if you access public Wi-Fi, please be sure to use a trusted VPN

Travel is wonderful, but a lost, damaged, or stolen phone can put a damper on any good times being had. A few proactive steps before leaving town can make any mishap a little more bearable.

If you would like help with any of these travel tips, pre-trip photo organizing, backing up, or post-trip preservation, I would love to help! If you have plans for a staycation, summer is a also a great time to tackle those photo projects you have been putting off.

Please join me on Saturday, June 13th at 2 PM at the Scotts Valley Library to learn more about keeping your memories safe and secure and easy to share! Registration is encouraged.
